Apple Music
Search Feature
This was another school project, which was to add a feature to an existing app. I chose Apple Music and implemented a Song Finder feature in the Search. From start to finish it took 4 weeks.
Research
I interviewed 5 people, 1 female and 4 males ranging from ages 30-40.
I found that the main music apps used were Apple Music, Amazon and Spotify. The Spotify users keep using that program because it's free plus they don't want to switch as it would be a pain to rebuild existing playlists in a new platform.
The things that these users most value is:
• Ease of use
• Simplified Searching
• Condensed features
• Easily import
• Have their own playlists plus discover new music
• Continuous playing without much intervening
Wireframe Sketches
I sketched out my idea of what the process would look like.
High Fidelity Wireframes
Using Sketch, I created some screens for each step in the process.
UI Design
UI was implemented in the wireframes using the color, fonts and elements from Apple Music, created in Sketch.
Prototype
I made a Prototype using the finished UI design using Invision. Selected users tested the process and flow of searching for a song using the Song Finder.
Interact with the prototype to the right.
Usability Test Results
I had six participants; 4 female, 2 male. They tested the process of searching for a song using the Song Finder in person on an iPhone. Two were done remotely, with one screen recording done from a user.
All participants thought the process was simple enough to figure out. They all loved the option to be able to search by lyrics and humming the tune and said they wish that existed.
The beginning Search screen of the Prototype originally started out with just a search bar but after hearing feedback from users that it would be nice to be able to start out with the Hum feature, or be able to at least choose how you want to start searching. I updated the prototype to start with a search bar plus the Song Finder button that takes them directly to a screen where they can choose where to start, whether by lyrics, humming tune, album or artist.
All users said they would definitely use this feature if it existed in Apple Music.
Next Steps
Continue to make iterations and retest with users to see how this can be made even better.
Overall, this was a fun project though a little stressful at first as I was trying to figure out what feature to add. I'm excited about how it turned out and think it could be a really fun and helpful feature.
